A Complete First-Timer's Guide to Fish River Canyon

Overview

The Fish River Canyon, located in southern Namibia, is the largest canyon in Africa and one of the most spectacular natural wonders on the continent. Stretching about 160 km in length and 27 km wide, with depths reaching approximately 550 to 600 meters, it offers breathtaking views and a unique hiking experience for adventure seekers and nature lovers.

Location

The Fish River Canyon cuts through the Koubis massif from Seeheim to the Orange River at Namibia’s border with South Africa. The southern section lies within the |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park, featuring Hobas Rest Camp—the main entrance to the canyon and starting point for the famous Fish River hiking trail. The trail finishes at the Ai-Ais Hotsprings and Spa, a relaxing spot perfect for rejuvenation after the hike.

Main Attractions

The Fish River Trail

This is one of the most popular and challenging treks in southern Africa. The self-guided trail extends about 90 km (or approximately 75-80 km using some shortcuts) from Hobas to Ai-Ais and typically takes 5 to 7 days to complete. Hikers must carry all their own food, sleeping equipment, and clothing. The trail showcases stunning canyon scenery, ancient rock formations, and opportunities to swim in refreshing river pools.

Due to its rugged environment and limited daily permits, only 30 hikers are allowed on the trail each day between May 1st and September 15th.

Slackpacking Options

For those who prefer a more comfortable experience, slackpacking tours are available, which include guided hikes with meals and accommodation at designated camps such as Camp Eternity and Camp Edge. These tours last 2 to 3 days and provide unique stone gabion shelters overlooking the canyon.
