How Many Days Do You Need to Explore Sabi Sands Game Reserve?

Overview

Sabi Sands Game Reserve, located adjacent to the famous Kruger National Park in South Africa, is renowned for its spectacular wildlife and luxury safari lodges. To fully appreciate the reserve and increase your chances of seeing the Big Five and other wildlife, the ideal minimum stay is three nights.

Ideal Duration

A three-night stay offers two full days in the reserve, allowing for a minimum of four game drives (morning and evening drives each day). Depending on your arrival and departure times, you might also fit an extra evening drive upon arrival and a morning drive before departure, totaling up to six drives.

With only two nights, you get one full day in the reserve, which may limit your wildlife viewing opportunities and overall experience.

Longer Stays

For visitors with more than three nights, it is recommended to consider moving between lodges to explore different areas of Sabi Sands. This increases the variety of wildlife and landscapes you can experience. However, note that driving across the entire reserve between lodges is restricted. Transfers usually involve exiting and re-entering the reserve gates, and additional gate fees may apply.

Game Drives and Activities

Most stays include two daily game drives and sometimes bush walks at lodges. Morning drives typically start about 30 minutes before sunrise and last until mid-morning. Afternoon drives generally begin between 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM, depending on the season.

Booking Tips

Sabi Sands lodges are highly popular and often run at full occupancy, especially during peak holiday periods. It is advisable to book as far in advance as possible, ideally 8 to 12 months ahead, or even earlier for peak seasons.

For the best Sabi Sands experience, plan a stay of at least three nights with multiple game drives to maximize wildlife sightings and safari enjoyment.
