Top Wildlife to Spot in the Garden Route
Top Wildlife to Spot in the Garden Route
The Garden Route in South Africa is famed for its breathtaking coastal scenery and lush landscapes, but it is also a spectacular destination for wildlife enthusiasts. Here are some of the top wildlife species you can spot along this beautiful stretch:
Whale Watching
Although the world-renowned Whale Capital, Hermanus, is just two hours south of Cape Town and not technically on the Garden Route, it is a must-visit for whale watchers. From June to December, you can spot southern right whales from the shore at Walker Bay without needing a boat. Plettenberg Bay on the Garden Route offers sightings of breeding southern right whales from July to November and migrating humpback whales in May, June, November, and January. Bottlenose dolphins are frequent visitors year-round.
Penguins
Penguins are a delightful sight along the Garden Route coastline, particularly at spots like Stoney Point and Betty's Bay, where African penguins can often be observed.
The Big Five and Game Reserves
Along the Garden Route, several game reserves offer opportunities to see the Big Five—lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo, and rhino. Addo Elephant National Park, often included in Garden Route itineraries, is renowned for its large elephant population and also hosts zebras, buffalo, lions, and other wildlife.
Bird Watching
The Garden Route is a paradise for bird watchers, with over 264 species of birds to spot. Highlights include herons, kingfishers, African fish eagles, and Knysna warblers in Knysna lagoon, as well as Southern and Northern Royal albatrosses seen during the winter months around the Cape Peninsula. The best bird watching season is from September to November.
Ostriches
Inland from the coast, Oudtshoorn is famous for its ostrich farms. Ostriches are the largest birds in the world and were key to the area's historical wealth due to the demand for their feathers.
Other Wildlife
Look out for rock hyraxes (known locally as dassies), which inhabit rocky outcrops and are fun to watch as they hop and sunbathe.
The Garden Route offers a rich blend of marine and terrestrial wildlife experiences, making it a perfect destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.
