Top Wildlife to Spot in Mount Kilimanjaro
Top Wildlife to Spot in Mount Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro, while primarily known for its majestic peak and trekking opportunities, is also home to diverse wildlife, particularly in its forest and lower slopes areas. Here are some of the top wildlife species you may encounter when exploring Mount Kilimanjaro:
Mammals
- Blue Monkey (Diademed Monkey): Commonly seen in the rainforest, especially along the Marangu and Rongai routes. Despite the name, they have a grayish color rather than blue. They inhabit treetops and are among the most frequently sighted primates on the mountain.
- Colobus Monkey: Characterized by striking black and white fur and long bushy white tails. These arboreal monkeys rarely come to the ground and feed mostly on leaves, fruits, and flowers. They live in small family groups in the rainforest areas.
- Olive Baboons: Present in the mountain’s forests but sightings are relatively rare.
- Bush Pigs: Noted for a distinctive white stripe down their backs, these nocturnal animals inhabit the forest.
- Warthogs, Hippos, Impalas, Dik-diks, Zebras, Elephants, Buffaloes, and Giraffes: These larger mammals are mainly found around the base of the mountain and occasionally on the lower slopes or nearby plains. Elephants sometimes migrate from Amboseli and Tsavo parks into Kilimanjaro’s montane forests.
- Leopards, Lions, and Cheetahs: Predators such as these are very rarely seen on the mountain, but lions are occasionally reported on the Shira Plateau, and buffalo can sometimes be spotted there as well.
Birds
- White-necked Ravens: Often seen scavenging around campsites.
- Tree Hyrax: A nocturnal mammal often heard rather than seen.
- Bearded Vultures and Steppe Eagles: Occasionally spotted soaring around the higher ridges.
Other Wildlife Notes
- Large mammals tend to avoid the heavily trafficked trekking routes, so sightings on the mountain are less common than in typical safari parks.
- Dense forest cover provides hiding places, making wildlife encounters more challenging.
Despite the difficulty in spotting many animals on Kilimanjaro itself, keep your eyes open for monkeys and smaller species as you trek. The wildlife adds an extra dimension to the breathtaking natural scenery and rich ecological diversity of the mountain.
