Gelada Monkeys

By far the most famous residents of the Simien Mountains, Gelada Monkeys are found in large troops throughout the park. With an estimated population of over 5,000, encounters with these fascinating primates are almost guaranteed. Known for their striking lion-like manes and heart-shaped red chest patch, they are peaceful and fairly tame, often becoming the most photographed animals during your visit.

The Simien Mountains are the last remaining sanctuary for the rare and impressively horned Walia Ibex, a wild goat endemic to the Ethiopian Highlands and sub-Saharan Africa. Spotting this unique species is a highlight for many visitors.

Ethiopian Wolf

One of the rarest canid species in the world, the Ethiopian Wolf is endemic to the Ethiopian Highlands with one of its largest populations found in the Simien Mountains. This shy and endangered predator adds to the park’s rich biodiversity.
