Zanzibar Travel Guide

Overview

Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania located in the Indian Ocean off the east coast of Africa. It consists of many small islands and two large ones: Unguja Island (the main island, often called Zanzibar Island) and Pemba Island. The capital city, Zanzibar City, is on Unguja Island, and its historic center, Stone Town, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its rich history and unique culture.

Culture and History

Zanzibar is famously known as the "Spice Islands" because of its long-standing spice trade, producing cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, coconut, and black pepper. The island's culture is a vibrant mix influenced by African, Arab, Indian, and European traders and settlers, with Swahili as the main language and Arabic influences visible in architecture and cuisine.
