Chyulu Hills National Park, Kenya

Chyulu Hills National Park protects a range of young volcanic hills stretching between Amboseli and Tsavo in southern Kenya, forming part of one of the most scenic and ecologically important landscapes in the country. Among the youngest volcanoes on Earth, the Chyulus are cloaked in rolling green grasslands, cloud forest and lava flows, and their porous rock acts as a giant natural reservoir, filtering rainwater that emerges as the crystal-clear springs feeding Mzima Springs and much of Mombasa's water supply. On clear days the hills offer breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro rising to the south. Wildlife includes elephants, buffaloes, elands, giraffes, bushbuck, and predators such as lions and leopards, while the area is famous among conservationists for its big tuskers moving between Amboseli and Tsavo. The park is a haven for walking safaris, horseback riding, hiking and exploring lava caves, offering a wilder, more intimate experience than the busier savanna parks. Its combination of volcanic scenery, forests and Kilimanjaro vistas makes it a favourite for photography and adventure.
