Hardap Recreation Resort, Namibia

Hardap Recreation Resort surrounds Namibia's largest inland body of water, the Hardap Dam, set among rolling hills and rocky outcrops just north of the town of Mariental in the country's arid south. Built on the Fish River, the reservoir is a striking oasis in a semi-desert landscape and a popular destination for both relaxation and outdoor recreation. The resort combines a scenic recreation area with an adjoining game park on the western shore, where wildlife such as gemsbok, springbok, kudu, mountain zebra, ostrich, red hartebeest and even black rhino can be seen against a backdrop of open plains and dwarf-shrub savanna. The dam and its surroundings are exceptionally rich in birdlife, attracting fish eagles, cormorants, herons, pelicans and a wealth of waterbirds, making it a rewarding stop for birdwatchers. The cool blue waters offer a rare chance for angling, boating and water-based leisure in Namibia, while the shoreline provides camping, picnicking and comfortable accommodation with sweeping views. Hardap is an ideal place to break a long southern journey, combining wildlife, birding, watersports and tranquil desert scenery.
