Hell's Gate National Park, Kenya
Hell's Gate National Park is one of the few parks in Kenya where visitors can walk and cycle freely among grazing wildlife, offering a rare, up-close encounter with nature in the heart of the Great Rift Valley. The park is defined by dramatic scenery: towering red cliffs, deep gorges carved by water and steam, and the iconic Fischer's Tower and Central Tower rock formations that rise abruptly from the plains. Geothermal activity is everywhere, with columns of steam, hot springs and the Olkaria geothermal station giving the landscape an almost otherworldly feel. Herds of zebra, giraffe, buffalo, eland and antelope roam the open savanna, while the cliffs shelter vultures, eagles and other raptors. Popular activities include hiking through Ol Njorowa Gorge, rock climbing on Fischer's Tower, cycling safaris, and photography against the striking volcanic backdrop. Its landscapes famously inspired scenery in animated films, and its proximity to Lake Naivasha makes it an easy and rewarding day trip.
