Kakamega Forest National Reserve, Kenya

Kakamega Forest National Reserve protects Kenya's only remaining tract of ancient tropical rainforest, a lush green island of biodiversity in the west of the country that is a surviving remnant of the great Guineo-Congolian forest that once stretched across the continent. This towering, mist-laden forest is a paradise for naturalists and birdwatchers, home to more than 300 bird species, including many found nowhere else in Kenya, alongside vibrant butterflies, chameleons, snakes and rare orchids. Its canopy shelters seven species of primate, among them black-and-white colobus, blue monkeys, De Brazza's monkeys and the red-tailed monkey, while the forest floor and streams support duikers, bushpigs and a wealth of insect and amphibian life. Guided walks along shaded trails reveal giant hardwood trees, medicinal plants and hidden glades, and viewpoints such as Lirhanda Hill offer sweeping vistas over the forest, especially at sunrise. With its cool climate, birdsong and dense greenery, Kakamega offers a completely different experience from Kenya's savanna parks, ideal for birding, nature walks and photography.
