Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, Botswana

Makgadikgadi Pans National Park protects a portion of one of the largest salt flats in the world, the remnant of an ancient super-lake. During the rainy season the pans attract vast herds of zebra and wildebeest on Botswana's second-largest migration, along with flocks of flamingos. In the dry season the surreal, shimmering white expanse offers otherworldly landscapes, quad-biking, and encounters with habituated meerkats.
