Gishwati-Mukura National Park — Entry Fees & Practical Info

Gishwati-Mukura National Park is Rwanda's newest and smallest national park, created in 2015 by combining two separate remnant forests, Gishwati and Mukura, in the mountainous northwest of the country. Once heavily degraded by deforestation, farming and resettlement, these forests are now the focus of an ambitious restoration and reforestation programme aimed at reconnecting them and expanding vital habitat. Perched along the ridge of the Congo-Nile divide, the park protects montane rainforest that is home to a small but recovering population of chimpanzees, along with golden monkeys, blue monkeys, and the acrobatic L'Hoest's and Angola colobus monkeys. Its canopy shelters more than 200 species of birds, including several Albertine Rift endemics, as well as orchids, tree ferns and other rich plant life. As a young community-focused park, Gishwati-Mukura offers guided nature and chimpanzee walks, birdwatching, waterfall hikes and immersive cultural experiences with neighbouring communities, allowing visitors to witness conservation and forest recovery in action while enjoying beautiful highland scenery.
