Akagera National Park — Entry Fees & Practical Info

Akagera National Park is the largest protected wetland-and-savanna ecosystem in central Africa and Rwanda's only Big Five destination, sprawling across the country's eastern border with Tanzania. Named after the Kagera River that feeds its chain of lakes and papyrus swamps, the park is a beautiful mosaic of rolling acacia savanna, grassy plains, forest-fringed lakes and marshland, offering a landscape strikingly different from Rwanda's mountainous west. Once devastated by poaching, Akagera has undergone a remarkable conservation turnaround under a partnership between the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks, with the successful reintroduction of lions and black rhinos restoring the full complement of the Big Five, alongside elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles and numerous antelope species. With over 500 bird species, including the rare shoebill stork, it is also a premier birding destination. Visitors enjoy game drives, guided boat safaris on Lake Ihema, night drives, and community and cultural experiences, making Akagera a rich and increasingly rewarding safari destination.
