Volcanoes National Park, in the far northwest of Rwanda, is one of Africa's most iconic wildlife destinations and the country's flagship for gorilla tourism. Protecting the lush, mist-shrouded slopes of five of the eight volcanoes of the Virunga Massif, it forms part of a transboundary conservation area shared with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The park is world-renowned as the home of the endangered mountain gorilla, and it was here that the primatologist Dian Fossey carried out her pioneering research, immortalised in 'Gorillas in the Mist'. Guided treks lead visitors through bamboo forest and dense montane vegetation to spend a precious hour with a habituated gorilla family, an experience widely regarded as one of the most moving in all of wildlife tourism. The park also shelters the rare golden monkey, buffaloes, and a wealth of birdlife, and offers hikes to Dian Fossey's tomb, volcano summits and crater lakes. With its dramatic scenery, extraordinary biodiversity and unforgettable primate encounters, it is the crown jewel of Rwandan tourism.
