Nyungwe National Park — Entry Fees & Practical Info

Nyungwe National Park protects one of the oldest and largest tracts of montane rainforest in Africa, blanketing the mountains of southwestern Rwanda near the border with Burundi and the shores of Lake Kivu. This ancient, biodiverse forest is believed to have survived the last Ice Age, allowing an extraordinary richness of life to accumulate over millennia. It is a haven for primates, home to an estimated 500 chimpanzees and twelve other primate species, including large, spectacular troops of Angola colobus monkeys that can number in the hundreds. Birdwatchers prize Nyungwe for its roughly 300 bird species, many of them Albertine Rift endemics found nowhere else. The park is also one of the most important water catchments in the region, feeding tributaries of both the Nile and the Congo. Its signature attraction is a thrilling canopy walkway suspended high above a forested valley, offering breathtaking views over the treetops. Visitors come for chimpanzee and colobus tracking, guided forest hikes to waterfalls, birdwatching and the canopy walk, all set amid cool, misty and profoundly beautiful scenery.
