Etosha National Park, Namibia

Etosha National Park is Namibia's flagship wildlife destination and one of the greatest game-viewing reserves in Africa, built around the vast Etosha Pan, a shimmering salt flat so large it is visible from space. For much of the year the pan is a dry, blinding-white expanse, but seasonal rains can transform parts of it into a shallow lagoon that draws flamingos and pelicans. Around its edges, a network of natural springs and waterholes concentrates wildlife in spectacular fashion, especially in the dry season when animals gather to drink. Visitors can expect to see elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, springbok, gemsbok, wildebeest and the endangered black rhino, often several species at a single waterhole. Floodlit waterholes at the main rest camps allow extraordinary night-time viewing. With excellent roads suited to self-drive safaris, well-equipped camps and a semi-arid landscape of mopane woodland and open plains, Etosha offers accessible, world-class wildlife watching and photography in a uniquely stark and beautiful setting.
