The Fish River Canyon is one of the largest canyons in the world and among the greatest natural wonders of southern Africa, carved over millions of years by the Fish River through the arid landscapes of southern Namibia. Stretching roughly 160 kilometres in length, up to 27 kilometres in width and plunging as much as 550 metres deep, this immense gorge is a breathtaking spectacle of layered rock, sweeping bends and rugged, sun-baked ridges that glow in the changing light of dawn and dusk. Part of the wider Ai-Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park shared with South Africa, the canyon is famous for the demanding multi-day Fish River hiking trail, one of Africa's classic wilderness treks, open only in the cooler months. At its southern end lie the Ai-Ais hot springs, whose mineral-rich thermal waters offer welcome relief to hikers. Wildlife adapted to the harsh conditions includes klipspringer, kudu, baboons and birds of prey. Whether admired from the panoramic viewpoints along the rim or explored on foot, the canyon offers unforgettable scenery, dramatic geology and a deep sense of timeless wilderness.
