Mangetti National Park is one of Namibia's newest and least-developed protected areas, a quiet expanse of Kalahari woodland in the Kavango region of the country's northeast. Proclaimed to conserve a distinctive belt of dry deciduous forest, it takes its name from the mangetti tree, whose nutritious nuts have long been an important food source for local communities. The park's landscape of deep Kalahari sands, broad grassy omirambas and dense stands of teak, false mopane and mangetti trees provides valuable habitat that differs markedly from Namibia's more famous desert parks. It shelters a variety of wildlife, including elephants, kudu, eland, roan and tsessebe antelope, giraffe, and smaller game, along with predators such as leopard and hyena, and it plays a role in wildlife breeding and regional conservation. Birdlife is varied, with many woodland species present.
