Amboseli National Park, Kenya

Amboseli National Park is one of Kenya's most iconic safari destinations, world-famous for its large, free-ranging herds of elephants set against the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain, just across the border in Tanzania. The park's name derives from a Maasai word meaning 'salty dust', a reference to the dry, ancient lakebed that dominates parts of the landscape. Despite the arid plains, underground springs fed by Kilimanjaro's melting snows create lush swamps and marshes that draw wildlife year-round, including elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, lions, cheetahs and hyenas. Amboseli is celebrated among researchers for hosting one of the longest-running elephant studies in the world, and its big tuskers are legendary among photographers. Over 400 bird species have been recorded, particularly around the wetlands. Visitors enjoy game drives, spectacular photography opportunities with Kilimanjaro as a backdrop, and cultural visits to nearby Maasai communities who have lived alongside this wildlife for generations.
