Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park and Reserve is a dazzling protected marine area off Kenya's south coast near Shimoni and Wasini Island, close to the Tanzanian border. Encompassing coral gardens, four small islands and clear turquoise waters, it is one of Kenya's premier destinations for snorkelling and scuba diving. The park's healthy coral reefs teem with hundreds of species of colourful fish, moray eels, octopus, sea turtles and vibrant invertebrates, while resident and migrating dolphins, especially bottlenose and humpback dolphins, are a major attraction on boat trips. The islands are important nesting and roosting sites for seabirds. Traditional dhow sailing safaris depart from Wasini and Shimoni, combining snorkelling over the reef with dolphin watching and a Swahili seafood lunch on Wasini Island. Beneath the surface, divers explore drop-offs and coral bommies alive with reef life.
