Meru National Park is a lush, scenic and refreshingly uncrowded wilderness in eastern Kenya, celebrated as the setting where conservationists George and Joy Adamson raised Elsa the lioness, immortalised in the book and film 'Born Free'. Watered by more than a dozen permanent rivers and streams flowing from the Nyambene Hills, the park is a green mosaic of doum palm groves, riverine forest, open grassland and dense woodland, giving it a distinctive character among Kenya's savanna parks. It supports elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffaloes, reticulated giraffes, Grevy's zebras and both black and white rhinos protected within a dedicated rhino sanctuary. Birdlife is exceptionally rich, with over 400 species recorded along the rivers and wetlands. Its remoteness means visitors often enjoy game drives and riverside picnics in near-solitude, making it a rewarding destination for travellers seeking an authentic, tranquil safari away from the crowds.
