Mount Kenya National Park protects the slopes and peaks of Mount Kenya, at 5,199 metres the highest mountain in Kenya and the second highest in Africa after Kilimanjaro. This ancient extinct volcano is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, prized for its rugged glacier-carved summits, alpine lakes, dense montane forest, bamboo zones and distinctive Afro-alpine moorland dotted with giant lobelias and groundsels found nowhere else. The mountain is sacred to the Kikuyu people, who traditionally regard it as the dwelling place of God. Its forested lower slopes shelter elephants, buffaloes, leopards, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and rare species such as the mountain bongo, while the higher zones reward trekkers with dramatic scenery and glaciers near the equator. The park is a premier destination for mountaineering and hiking, with popular routes such as Sirimon, Naro Moru and Chogoria leading towards Point Lenana, the trekkers' summit. Beyond climbing, visitors enjoy nature walks, birdwatching, trout fishing and photography amid some of East Africa's most spectacular high-altitude landscapes.
