Mt. Longonot National Park, Kenya

Mount Longonot National Park surrounds a striking dormant stratovolcano rising above the floor of the Great Rift Valley, near Lake Naivasha. Its most famous feature is the near-perfect summit crater, roughly two kilometres wide, cradling a forested caldera that has grown wild and inaccessible over centuries. The park is a favourite among hikers and day-trippers from Nairobi, offering an exhilarating climb to the crater rim followed by a circular trail around the entire caldera, rewarded with panoramic views across the Rift Valley, Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate. The mountain's steam vents are a reminder of the volcanic forces still simmering beneath. The slopes and surrounding plains support wildlife such as zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, gazelles and occasionally leopards, along with a variety of birds and raptors soaring on the thermals. With its dramatic scenery, invigorating trails and accessibility, Longonot is one of Kenya's most popular hiking and photography destinations.
