Shimba Hills National Reserve — Entry Fees & Practical Info

Shimba Hills National Reserve is a cool, green coastal rainforest and grassland reserve set on a plateau above the Indian Ocean, only a short drive inland from the beaches of Diani and Mombasa. This lush, misty landscape is one of the largest remaining areas of coastal forest in East Africa and a biodiversity hotspot rich in rare plants, butterflies and orchids. The reserve is best known as the stronghold of Kenya's largest population of the endangered sable antelope, a striking species found nowhere else in the country. It also shelters elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, bushbuck, and troops of colobus and Sykes' monkeys, while more than 100 bird species inhabit the forest canopy. A highlight is the Sheldrick Falls, a beautiful 21-metre waterfall reached on a guided walk, along with scenic viewpoints looking out towards the coast. Cooler and greener than the coastal lowlands, Shimba Hills offers game drives, guided nature walks, birdwatching and photography, making it an easy and refreshing safari escape for visitors staying on the south coast.
